Circular economy
Most people know something about circular economy: it is about recycling, rite? Not exactly, it goes much further, trying to eliminate all waste. And did you know there are 5 circular business models that help realising this circular economy? This fits perfectly within DesignRepublic’s strategy: maybe it is not feasible to change everything at the same time, but each step counts.
3 economy types
The basis of a circular economy is that nothing is lost: resources circulate through endless loops in the system. This is quite different from the linear economy where resources are considered abundant and the impact on the environment is not a concern. This linear economy is built on the principle of ’take, make, waste’. In the re-use economy, parts of the used products are recycled but there is still waste. The circular economy goes quite a bit further by eliminating waste 100%.

Of course the whole economy cannot change all at once, but taking steps in one of the 5 business models driving the circular economy can already make quite a difference:
1. Circular Supplies:
renewable energy / bio-based or recyclable input
2. Resource Recovery: recover useful resources / energy out of disposed products or by-products
3. Product Life Extension: repair / upgrade / resell
4. Sharing Platforms: enable increased utilization rate
5. Product as a Service: offer product access and retain ownership
